How to "Employ Yourself"

Your Mindset is crucial…it determines how you filter the information coming into your life and business… almost everyone, I talk to recently is letting the negative press determine their “station in life“…please reread this last sentence. Never let anyone, other than you, determine your “station in life“.

Too many people are waiting for something external to motivate them into action…YOU DON’T HAVE TO WAIT FOR SOMETHING BAD TO HAPPEN IN YOUR LIFE OR ANYONE ELSE’S LIFE IN ORDER TO GET YOURSELF INTO ACTION.

I just want to introduce a topic that I will be writing about in detail soon because it is relevant to everyone…especially in these media driven (and it doesn’t matter whether there is a real or perceived DEPRESSION out there) doomsday television shows.

How to properly “EMPLOY YOURSELF”

In this day and age (yes I know I am sounding like an ‘old grandpa’…but, please don’t tune me out…this information is so vital to YOUR success), people have either forgotten or have not properly learned HOW to “employ themselves”.

Another word for “HOW to ‘employ yourself’” is DISCIPLINE.

You need to set up rules and procedures for yourself that help you advance the business projects, actions and behaviors that are going to drive you to the success level, that you EARN.

The concept of “employing yourself” is about teaching you how to get stuff done in your business and life.

What most people don’t realize is this:

You either get to keep the reasons why you are NOT succeeding. Or, you get to keep the results that show you ARE succeeding.

You can have either the reasons or the results…but, you can’t have both. You must make the CHOICE…that means make the DECISION of which one do you want…do you want to keep the reasons (another word for that is the excuses) why you are not succeeding or do you want to keep the results that show you are succeeding?

Make your choice NOW… and then, learn HOW TO EMPLOY YOURSELF if you have decided that you want to KEEP THE RESULTS that you truly want to achieve in life…remember you can’t have both.

And, let me make sure you know this…you must make a decision. There is no such thing as a “non-choice”. A “non-choice” is, by default, a choice to keep the reasons why you want to fail.

One of the reasons people fail is because they have NOT learned how to implement the concept of “employing yourself” into their lives. Remember, this version of the concept is the “quick ‘n short” version…I will have a more detailed version for you in one of my future writings.

I will introduce the concept of Nate the Boss and Nate the Employee at this point. If you were working for a corporation, you would have to report to a boss. It is the boss’ responsibility to outline the job duties and determine your compensation for carrying out those duties and tasks exactly as it is outline in the Standard Operating Procedures Manuals.

So, here’s what you, Nate the Employee, does…you interview for the job with Nate  the  Boss…and Nate the Boss says, “I am looking for an employee who will do these seven things exactly as I tell them to do them and when I tell them to do them… I want to pay that person $250,000 a year…and here’s what I want them to do every day:

  1. Complete your homework, after each trading session by completing the Trader Advantage ES Daily Report by 8:20 am every morning Central Time.
  2. Follow the either the Anaconda or Baby Anaconda trading rules provided to you in the Traders Advantage Methodology Mentoring Program.
  3. Be at your computer ready to trade at 8:25 am Central Time Monday through Friday.
  4. Keep your trade setup checklist in front of you and your daily morning report in front of you each trading day.
  5. Write out your notes as you are trading throughout the session recording your thinking prior to trade setup and while you are in trade setups.
  6. Read a new or re-read one of the original long articles on the www.natebrooks.com website every day OR in the back office, I want you to look at one of the short videos or listen to one of the 10 minute audios in the password protected area every day five days a week.
  7. I want you to call me every day at 10:15 am Monday through Friday and one time one either Saturday afternoon between 2 and 4 pm or Sunday evening after 9 pm and before 11 pm.

So Nate the Boss says…that’s what I am looking for in an employee…someone who can do those seven things every day … Monday through Friday.

Now, Nate the Employee says…”Wow!…you can count on me…I’ll read three or  four articles a day…even.” Now, Nate the Boss says, “no…all I want you to do is do one of the things each day in point #6…can you commit to do that.” Nate the Employee is all excited and he says…”you got a deal…I am your guy and you both agree to start the deal on Monday”.

Now, Monday rolls along and Nate the Employee is sitting at the computer at 8:28 am all prepared and excited to get started. But, he gets a tap on the shoulder…from Nate the Boss…who says, “I don’t know about you, but my watch says 8:28 am and my agreement with you was that you would be sitting here at 8:25 am…wasn’t that our agreement?” Nate the Employee say… yes…and I will be here tomorrow on time. But, Nate the Boss says “I need to renegotiate our contract to lower your pay immediately since you didn’t meet the first day’s requirement.”

Nate the Boss says…I pay you to do all 7 things…nothing more and nothing less…if you are not going to do them, as I instructed you to do so, I will lower your pay immediately because that was not our agreement.

Nate the Employee begs and promises it won’t happen again so we continue with the original agreement.

At 10:16 am, Nate the Boss notices that he has not received a call from Nate the Employee yet. At 10:22 am, Nate the Boss calls and gets a busy signal and he tries again…busy signal and finally at 10:27 am, he reaches Nate the Employee.

Nate the Employee is literally screaming in the phone with excitement…”you are not going to believe this Boss, I have been on the phone with John, you know the #1 trader at Boy Do We Fool’em Trading Company, and he was teaching me their number one trade setup and he wants to meet you and do the same thing with you and the rest of our traders…”

Now, Nate the Boss says… “hold on Nate the Employee…do you know what time it is?…and he hears…yes, but, you are not going to believe the tricks John just showed me about the Triple Lunar Cycle when the Moon is at the 27 degree angle…it is like pretty awesome…you have got to see this.”

Nate the Boss says… “do you remember our agreement?” and Nate the Employee says…yes, but, you are not going to believe what John just showed me…it is the best secret I have ever heard about in trading…John showed me the one trade he took with it this week and how he hit a homerun with it.

Nate the Boss says… “our agreement says that I pay you $250,000 a year and you do the 7 things in our Trading Manifesto and one of those things said that you would call me at 10 am sharp and here it is a few a minutes after 10:30 am and I was the one that called you.” Nate the Employee says…yes, but, this thing with John was happening and I thought it would be best if we knew this information and he could train us and all that.

Nate the Boss say… “you have violated our agreement AGAIN and you have given me excuses…we have to make a new agreement between us…if you are not going to do #3 and #7, I will pay you $17,000 a year to do the rest of the items on the list.

Nate the Employee starts crying and saying things like… that’s not fair…I don’t believe you are doing this to me…I was only a couple minutes late this morning and John show me things that should help us in  the  long run.

Nate the Boss says, “I hired you to do all 7 things because that is what it takes to succeed…I am your mentor and your boss and I carefully outlined and told you exactly what it was going to require of you to be successful…but you chose to give me reasons why you did not do them…had you done them ALL exactly as I showed you, you would have had the results and got paid the $250,000 for the year…but, you never even gave yourself the chance to EARN IT.”

Please understand this simple “role playing story” underscores the importance of writing down your rules, the ones that you will DO consistently and then, you must stay focused on doing your specific actions, do the tasks at hand without letting other things disrupt your flow and then, manage yourself like a tough BOSS manages an undisciplined EMPLOYEE.

Remember, you either get to keep your reasons why you are not successful OR your results that show you are successful. You can’t have both. So you must ask yourself the tough question right now…Do you have the results you want in your life right now?

I have another concept that I teach people called “you have to know where the edge is”. The reason I mention it here is because you must learn how to employ yourself with rigorous discipline and unrelenting persistence to Keep Your Word to yourself and others…to the exact letter and to the exact time…EVERY DAY!

Most of you think it doesn’t make a difference whether you allow yourself to be one minute late…but, it does make a difference. It does make a difference when you don’t keep your word. It does make a difference when you allow yourself to accept excuses rather than results. It does make a difference when you lie to yourself.

Always remember, if you know how to day trade, you just need to put a little money into an account and you can pull yourself out of ANY financial hole fairly quickly…so even if you have to buy a new computer and start from scratch…you can regroup.  There is no better business in the world… because the opportunities for your upside possibilities are unlimited.  With the right trading setups, proper money management procedures and solid discipline you can change your financial future, in a short period of time.

One of my early motivational sayings when I got started selling real estate in a down cycling market, when we were in a recession, was, “There’s a recession out there and I am choosing NOT to participate.”

I may have to change the saying a little to “There’s a Depression out there and I am choosing NOT to participate.” Just go to work and just kept your mindset right and you will achieve immediate success because you believe you will succeed when you follow your disciplines and keep learning new skills.
